Welcome to the website of the TEEN-BESTrial

The TEEN-BESTrial is a study in which two types of weight loss surgery in adolescents with morbid obesity (aged 13-17) are compared: the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Gastric Sleeve (see images below).

The TEEN-BESTrial is developed by a collaboration of bariatric surgeons and pediatricians who are specialized in the treatment of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents.

This website provides information regarding the content of the study and the study design. Information is available for both patients and professionals. On most pages, files can be downloaded containing more detailed/additional information.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The stomach is reduced by dividing the stomach into a small upper part (new stomach) and a much bigger lower part (gastric remnant). The new stomach will be connected with a lower part of the small intestine (red arrows). Measured from the new stomach, after 100-150 centimeter the small intestine will be connected with the part of the small intestine that was connected to the gastric remnant. From this point, the gastric juices and the bile reach the food (green arrows), after which the digestion of the food starts.

Gastric Sleeve

A large part of the stomach is “stapled” along the length of the stomach and then removed from your body. A new stomach is formed, in a tube like structure (tube stomach). The small intestine remains intact.
